I've been watching this tv show from 60 years ago. In the episode I'm watching a man bought 11 gallons of gas at a full service station for $3.34. Those were the days plus no seat belt laws!

Now days a person might pay that much for one gallon!

.

When I started driving in the late 70’s gas was not much more - about 40¢. Within 6 months, it doubled to 80¢

My car got 8mpg. With high octane, it got 12mpg.

My father could not understand why I would but the “designer gas” for 5¢ more to increase my mileage by 50%.

I think it was 1978 or 1979 when gas prices went over a dollar. The gas pumps weren't prepared. So one had to double whatever the price on the pump said. I remember the first time for me. It was lunch hour. I wasn't paying attention. I only had a few dollars on me. After I filled up I had no money left to buy lunch.

When I got my first car at age sixteen (1956) It was a 1939 Dodge Coupe and had, for the first time, the stick shift on the steering wheel rather than on the floor. I was able to drive around for a full week on one dollars worth of gas.

I remember the GAS WARs btwn competing stations and my mom collected drinking glasses free with a fill-up then near xmas she switched to HESS so she got points towards a free HESS OIL TRUCK for me - with Working Lights!!!!! The attendant washed your windows/checked the tire pressure and your oil. ANd I am pretty sure gas was under 30cents a gallon
