Origin of the term "hardon?"

Well, so now that we know all about the middle finger and pluck yew ;-) , does anyone know anything about the origin of the term, "hardon?" }(

I Googled the term and can only find the obvious.

 

hard-on, noun. An erect penis.

 

This was from the Dictionary of Slang. Not even Wikipedia offers a origin for the word and just includes it as part of the formal definintion of an erection. (Something we are all familar with around here. }( )

From the online etymological dictionary,

 

"hard-on 'penile erection' first recorded 1893",

 

also, from the same source, on the entry "boner",

 

"Meaning 'erect penis' is 1950s, from earlier bone-on (1940s), probably a variation (with connection notion of "hardness") of hard-on (1893)."
