Tonight was the final of the 51st Eurovision Song Contest - the annual kitsch extravaganza that sees pop acts from 24 countries face off before tens of millions of television viewers.

Lordi, a Finnish metal band with monster masks and apocalyptic lyrics, just won the contest tonight Ñ a stunning upset in the competition better known for bland dance music and bubble-gum pop. Maybe we'll see a return to the heavy-metal style ...

Just saw it tonight on Aussie TV. Are they singing live? The sounds seems too perfect which makes me think that all the performers were lip-synching.

The highlight for me would be the 4 back-up dancers from Turkey. Yummmmm

I only saw a small portion and the vote results, but the British commentator was complaining how countries kept for their neighbors or countries with historic ties(Scandinavian for other Scandinavians; Cyprus for Greece), but I thought shared history and culture explained it more than political favoring. I was surprised (boorish American that I am) that each country had equal votes. Monaco has as many votes Great Britain, but there is a great difference in populations.

I did see Dima and liked his performance but did not see Lordi and so can't completely judge.
