You should see pics from "Hud" and "Cool Hand Luke". I saw him once at intermission at theater. Gorgeous (in a suit) but smaller that I expected.

? Are those pics from "Cat on Hot Tin Roof"?

I think that they're from that movie, but I'm not sure.

I think all eight pictures are from "The Long Hot Summer", one of my favorites. Joanne Woodward, Orson Welles, Angela Lansbury, Tony Franciosa, and Lee Remick.

I think you are right, Oliver....He was Ben Quick, the barnburner..from those Faulkner stories...

But he was also really hot in those silk pajamas in "Cat"...lusting after Skippy...

Any possibility those pics were from "Sweet Bird of Youth"? He played Chance Wayne opposite Geraldine Page's Alexandra Del Lago. The first pic, especially, looks so familiar.

Those pix are from "Long Hot Summer", and it's true

that he played the male prostitute in "Sweet Bird".

I peed next to him at the Actor's Studio in NYC, and

yeah, he's kinda short. But we're all the same size

lying down.

Paul Newman once played a male prostitute?! Wow!! I didn't know that he did such edgy roles. I didn't know that actors even did edgy roles back in the day.

I bet that he was playing a gigolo type where he was servicing women, right?

You are right about that - back then they were always called 'gigolos' and seemed to be exclusive to Tennessee Williams plays, which in turn were always about 'loved starved Southern women' (of a certain age), to quote Margo Channing in All About Eve.

If you haven't seen SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH, check it out. Paul has a number of shirtless scenes, and I think there's even one scene of him doing sit-ups shirtless. Much of the dialog has the other characters commenting on his physical beauty.

Anybody read the Paul Newman book that talks about him doing just about any man who was incredibly hot back then? I skimmed a copy in a bookstore.

Yes, I read it and if even half of it is true, he was a busy boy. I didn't finish it, though; it was just too raunchy for me and I didn't believe most of it. Newman was an immensely talented actor and director and the book hardly dealt with any of that. His performance in "The Hustler" is right up there with anything Brando or Clift ever did, and his Chance Wayne in "Sweet Bird of Youth" is superb too. I'm reading a biography of Tennessee Williams right now and everybody wanted Newman for the show but nobody except Williams wanted Geraldine Page for the Princess. She ended up giving a legendary performance and Newman was rather eclipsed in the stage version. But he was a smart cookie and knew that when they came to do the film, close-ups, and shirtless scenes would greatly enhance and enlarge his performance and he was right. Page was still magnificent but Newman was the one everybody talked about.
