I see a lot of ads on escort sites now where the guys use the word "thug", presumably to refer to themselves. Am I missing something, is this supposed to be a good thing in somebody's mind? What precisely are they advertising? That they'll knock you out and steal your wallet?

You can look up the other 8 entries yourself, however, when used in current day conversations it is not necessarily referring to the "thug" the Little Rascals would discuss. As times change so does the vernacular.

I don't think it means anything so harsh in this case.

Rather it is a newish term for very rough trade-and usually either latino,black,sometimes something else(or all of the above.

Of course this is not a new thing,johns have been chasing rough trade for centuries!

Yeah, ROUGH trade is DEFINITELY what the term "thug" means. BTW, it was truly pathetic how you IMPLIED that it was Blacks and/or Latinos who are thugs, but tried to cya, with the "sometimes something else" comment!

My dears, when it comes to male prostitutes, the term "thug" refers mainly to wearing oversized clothing and speaking grammatically incorrect english. Or, you could say, that they know how to walk the walk, and talk the talk, but they still scream like a lttle girl when they're tied to the bed.

 

However, when one finds a REAL gay thug, there is a thing worth it's weight in gold! You can always tell by the tats... an 8-ball, playing cards, a place-name on the stomach or neck, or a crudely drawn caricature... those are the marks of a genuine thug!

 

Flamboyant abstract tats meant to accentuate ones muscle mass, swallows (or any bird), tribal circles on the bicep, solar signs between the shoulder blades, and japanese-woodblock-print scenes are definitely in the realm of NON-thug illustration.

 

What's the difference? And what is it that makes true thugs appealing? Well, as the old saying goes... if you have to ask, you'll never know!

Well, FWIW, I searched the word "thug" with NYC, Chicago, and LA, and all of the matches on rentboy came up with guys who looked pretty black, so there seems to be some truth to the stereotype.
