I once wrote a letter to Senator Feinstein and my Representative, who each wrote to the foreign minister of the Cayman Islands, during that debacle. Maybe a letter to one's Senators or Representative may put some political pressure on Nigeria...

The local population is still very hostile against gay people visiting the Cayman Islands. I was there this past February and was "greeted" by a group of fanatics with placards "This is against the Bible" and "Go back home". What I call a friendly welcome ...

RE: cancel your trip to Nigeria

As here in the USA, politicians pander to the loudest voices in their constituencies. Many Nigerian politicians come from traditional backgrounds where religious beliefs are dominant--whether they be Christian, Muslim or Traditional.

At the moment President Obasanjo is near the end of his supposed last term, unless he gets changes in the Nigerian Constitution. Nigeria is also at or near the top of the list of nations where corruption is rampant.

There are so many problems facing Nigeria and Nigerians that I am surprised and disappointed that the government would spend time and money on a law(s) which are basically unnecessary.

Letters to your Senators and Representative might help---at least they would be aware that Americans are concerned with the situation in Africa's most populous nation, and a nation which provides the US with enormous amounts of petroleum. Let's be honest--our politicians also react to areas where the US has a "vested interest."
