He grew up in the UK and trained as an actor at Manchester University (The Arden School of Theatre) after which he moved to London to pursue a career in acting. He performed in various productions for theatres including Haymarket Theatre (Leicester), Pilot Theatre Co., The Soho Theatre, The English Touring Theatre & Southwark Playhouse. After numerous years of working in theatre he moved to France and went on to study for his master's degree then doctorate in Arts of the Stage at Paris 8 University, under the direction of professor Claude Amey, his main focus on "Queer Arts". During this time he continued to work as an actor and participated in workshops with companies and practitioners such as Odin Teatret, Antonio Araujo, Jacques Clancy, The Living Theatre with Judith Malina, Jack Waltzer & Michele Kokosowski. After several years of study he left his doctorate unfinished in order to pursue a career in cinema. After training at The CEFPF film school Paris he went on to direct films related to his research on Queer. Hickling's films are characterized by religious symbolism, metaphor and explicit sexual representations, often blending the boundaries between surrealism and realism. His style intertwines theatrical genres, freely crossing from drama to dance and transcending traditions of individual forms. The work incorporates equally performance art, poetry & painting. His films have been screened in LGBTQ film festivals worldwide. Little Gay Boy, Where Horses Go To Die and Frig are of an autobiographical nature and Frig marks the end of what Hickling has called the first chapter. He continues to work as an actor specializing in voice over and has provided voices in advertising, video games, cartoons and animation movies.

Konrad Eiring During Konrad Eiring's Class 3A sectional cross country meet in 2013, the Barrington runner suffered a fractured fibula. The injury required him to spend more than three months in a walking boot and cost him the majority of his junior track season. For a competitive young athlete — as a sophomore he anchored Barrington's state title-winning 4x800-meter relay — the injury was devastating. However, the injury served as a twist of fate that changed Eiring's life for the better. Eiring first came out to two close friends from a youth group with whom he had a close bond beyond sports. They reacted with support. Eiring began to tell teammates a few months later. He told track teammates, typically one-on-one, when they were out for training runs. And the day after his junior season ended, he wrote a Facebook post telling all of his connections that he was gay. "My senior year, I was the most confident I ever was on the track," Eiring said. "It was really powerful.
