  1. I suppose these maps are a good starting point for tourists and others who aren’t frequently there. But they seem incomplete to me when discussing street crime. For example, this portion of the map includes the eastern part of República but not the western end starting at Rua Aurora going to the Chili Pepper Hotel, in the Vila Buarque neighborhood and towards the big Santa Cecília bus station — those surrounding areas are very dicey and dangerous for a solo traveler. Not a favela in sight.
  2. It’s absolutely possible that both things can be and are true at the same time: Most people who live in favelas are honest, hard-working people of little means AND favelas are dangerous places mostly run by heavily-armed drug traffickers that strangers and non-residents (especially males) have NO business going into unaccompanied by a resident.
  3. Yep. Although this AP report is 8 years old, it could have been made yesterday! Note: other Brazilian cities like Salvador have this bus problem, too.
  4. Agreed. It’s that “it hasn’t happened to me (yet), so it must not be true” mindset that is so dangerous, because it lulls you into a sense of complacency, when it’s important to remain vigilant. Yep. Every one I know as well has experienced at least a petty theft on the street or a mugging — no matter their size, gender or color. Ask any attendant of last weekend’s Celebration of 100 years of The Copacabana Palace how that went. Over 500 arrests on the street and beach for theft and assault. The areas around the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema are especially target-rich environments for the ladrãozinhos, but ironically, the Zona Sul / South Zone neighborhoods are still the safest neighborhoods inside the city limits of Rio. A casual or unseasoned tourist would be foolish to stay outside of Zona Sul — unless they have a very specific reason and are staying with someone who knows what they’re doing and where they’re going.
  5. Wow. You scare pretty easily. I don’t find anything remotely scary or intimidating about Junior.
  6. 15 to 20 feet in? In all fairness, that’s less than the width of the first building. Certainly not enough to make a valid judgment about traveling alone as a stranger inside an unfamiliar anything, much less a favela.
  7. Perhaps your Google Search is broken? Prosecutors are already being overzealous with the new felony prostitution law in Texas, in spite of earlier legislative claims that the law was designed only to curb and fight sex trafficking. Earlier this year, the Department of Homeland Security had made almost four dozen (46) arrests for felony sex trafficking in North Texas. However, it was soon discovered that those arrested on federal felony charges as traffickers were actually individuals who thought they were dealing with sex workers (prostitutes) for consensual sex. They were “johns” looking for a “date,” and not players in the business of trafficking people. Another bogus 'sex trafficking sting' led by Homeland Security agents REASON.COM The Department of Homeland Security is playing vice cop, again, while pretending that the agency...
  8. Safety (or rather, perceptions of it) is always such a thorny topic. But I would always recommend a new traveler, an older (elderly) traveler, a disabled or not-in-shape traveler, or a traveler who doesn’t look like he “fits in” to the demographic of these neighborhoods, to take an Uber or a taxi to and from any of these saunas. Once you can walk to and from the Metro stations confidently and with an air that you know exactly where you are, then maybe try the Metro.

  10. The manager, as he has dealt before with Traveling Karens, most likely would’ve just shaken his head and said, “gringos”. And then, had a good laugh with the staff and the locals about how USAmericans always think everything has to be about them.
  11. It’s now (new law as of 2021) a felony in the State of Texas — the second most populous state in the USA — to engage or offer to engage in an act of prostitution. First-time is 2 years in jail and a $10,000 fine. Second time is a third-degree felony with even harsher penalties.
  12. More information from other local news sources, translated into English from Google Translate: Man who claims to have killed 9 set fire to ex's house and charges R$ 300 per program Police reported that Renato Teixeira knew the victims through a dating app. Image: Playback/TV Globo Herculano Barreto Filho From UOL, in São Paulo 07/07/2023 04:00 am The man who claimed to have committed nine murders in the last 15 years set fire to the house of an ex-girlfriend and told police he charged R$300 for sex programs. Convicted of two robberies, he had been on the run since September 2021, when he broke an electronic anklet. What happened Call boy Renato Teixeira da Silva, 35, confirmed in a statement that he had opened the gas cylinders at his ex's house, spread alcohol around the property and set it on fire. The case occurred three weeks ago, in the north zone of São Paulo, while the property was empty. He still doesn't have a built-in defense. Renato's ex-girlfriend sought out the Civil Police and identified him as the man indicted for three stabbing murders between November 2021 and December 2022. Since then, she has been threatened with death by phone and WhatsApp messages. The call boy was found and captured last Wednesday (5). His arrest was converted into preventive yesterday, in a custody hearing. Described as "cold", the author of the crimes quoted the Bible after being arrested. He said: 'killing is a normal thing for me' and that he committed the crimes because he couldn't be stopped. He coldly narrated the crimes in testimony and did not show any kind of regret. — Roberto Krasovic, delegate of the 6th DP of São Bernardo do Campo He was indicted for three murders, but said he committed another six. Now, we are investigating to find out if there were other crimes. — Giuliano de Migueli, assistant delegate of the 6th DP of São Bernardo do Campo Who are the victims So far, the prostitute is appointed by the police as the author of three deaths. They are: • Iraildes Sousa Silva, 49; • José Roberto Campanaro, 59; • Mario Marchiani, 60. The diarist Iraildes was stabbed to death in November 2021 on a street in Pirituba, in the north of São Paulo. After fleeing, Renato confessed to femicide on social media, motivated by a banal fight. Renato lived in the victim's house, with whom he had a relationship. He committed the crime just two months after breaking an electronic anklet and starting to be considered a fugitive by Justice. José Roberto was stabbed to death in July 2022 in his own apartment in Santo André, in Greater São Paulo. His body was found days later in a state of decomposition on a bed, wearing only underwear and a T-shirt. Mário Marchiani was murdered on December 2, 2022 in a house where Renato used to receive clients in São Bernardo do Campo, also in Greater São Paulo. In testimony, the prostitute said that he committed the crime because the victim would have said that he wanted to consume narcotics. How the police cracked the case In December 2022, the suspect sent a WhatsApp message to the owner of the 40 m² property in São Bernardo do Campo that he rented to do programs. In the message, he asked her not to be scared when she entered the house and found the body of a man he had killed there. The police identified that the body was that of Mário Marchiani, until then considered missing. He was identified by a tattoo of a blue hummingbird on his shoulder. Based on surveillance cameras, investigators found that the man who identified himself as Bruno on dating sites and apps was Renato Teixeira da Silva. The program boy took the victim's car, cell phone and laptop after committing the crime. According to the police, he used Marchiani's fingerprint to unlock his phone and make bank transfers. According to the Civil Police, the prostitute rented properties for short periods based on verbal agreements. In December, he lived in a house in Guarujá, on the coast of São Paulo, where he stayed for two months. Homem que diz ter matado 9 queimou casa e cobra R$ 300 por programa NOTICIAS.UOL.COM.BR
  13. Not necessarily so. This conclusion goes against recent (as in the past few years) reports of higher-end, costlier garotos de programas / gogo boys / massagistas in various Brazilian cities who have robbed, assaulted or blackmailed clients
  14. [Translated to English from Google Translate] Garoto de programa is arrested and claims he killed 14 people in São Paulo A 35-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday (July 5) in São Paulo and claimed he killed 14 people, according to information from Record TV . According to the police, Renato Teixeira da Silva, who worked as a male escort and used the codename Bruno, murdered clients when he felt upset. Deputy Roberto Krasovic, holder of the 6th DP of São Bernardo do Campo, in Greater São Paulo, says that, in a statement, Renato said that he started killing when he was 19 years old. “He couldn't hear 'no,'” says Krasovic. According to police, the boy has traits of psychopathy. [OP’s note: Gee, ya really think?] Leaving the police station for the Legal Medical Institute (IML), Renato confirmed to Record TV that he had already claimed 14 victims. According to the police, he usually used a knife, but the police are also investigating the use of poison. In testimony, Renato reported nine homicides. The police were investigating the suspect on account of three deaths — of two men and a woman, residents of the ABC region and the capital of São Paulo. The investigation continues and the São Paulo police ask that people who have reports related to the suspect contact the São Bernardo Police Station. — With information from Portal R7 Garoto de programa é preso e afirma que matou 14 pessoas em SP WWW.FOLHAVITORIA.COM.BR Em depoimento, segundo a polícia, o homem afirmou que começou a matar aos 19 anos
  15. It’s not up to me to get you to believe anything, nor is it something I even wish to do. As I mentioned before, your past judgment on the boards has shown that you’re more wrong than right. Even admitting this in your own words: “I am often wrong”. But I challenge you to name even one thing that I have ever posted here or elsewhere, asserted as fact not opinion, that you know to be untrue. This ought to be quite good.
  16. See the post above yours. It requires no further explanation.
  17. I have always been a terrible liar, so I learned early on that for me, honest portrayals are the most cost-efficient and easy-to-remember. I’m pretty much WYSIWYG — for better of for worse, my online persona is who I am offline. That doesn’t necessarily mean I am an open book to anyone and everyone, online or offline. Not at all, and quite the contrary. What I DO choose to display or reveal, however, is the same as I would be or do offline.
  18. I can side with you when you’re right, as you know. Unfortunately, you’ve proven here and other places to be more wrong than right. I think you might want to step back a bit on this one and concede that maybe this is another one of those times that you’ve judged wrong.
  19. The only part that could be kidding is the “sorely missed” part.
  20. I’m not going to be the one to violate TOS, but in case you’re curious and good with the search function (and even a cursory knowledge of poli-tricks in the last 20 years), his posts here were exposed on Twitter.
  21. The once-prolific poster who often visited and later expatted to Rio, and behind the scenes, started a porn / escort site, met a garoto, married him, and both became embroiled in an international espionage and election scandal, is sorely missed. But you can still find him all over Elon Musk’s Twitter.
  22. Nope. You’re just a retired academic blowhard with endless disposable time to troll the gay sex trade message boards — and to doxx other board members who aren’t interested in communicating with you offline.
  23. Those are the times they should be grateful that they don’t speak or understand much English!
  24. With due respect, I really doubt that’s how it actually went down. He, sensing that not only his multiple user names across several platforms but also his offline ID were known (which, hey, what else did he expect when he personally contacted posters off-board without consent, and began to be intrusive to and annoy them?), went to the mod complaining that he was being exposed / outed on the board (which wasn’t happening, but when you’re guilty and a cornered rat, just accuse others of what you’re guilty of — seemed to work for Trump for a lifetime up to now). The mod did a ban on the poster he bitched about (me, I don’t change usernames) AND him (or at least THAT username, he’s used / uses several — but as you already pointed out, can’t or refuses to hide his blathering, blistering, nonsensical communicative style, because he likes to think it’s some outward sign of hyperintellect). I don’t know who the others are, if any, who received the ban.
