Found this (undated) picture with the caption, "To work in water in the past without fundoshi in Taiwan." (From the late 19th century, Taiwan was a colony of Japan. That ended after WWII, which was also when Japanese men stopped using fundoshi--their traditional undergarment, fashioned from a length of cotton-- as their usual form of underwear.)
