I look forward to the day we can sue escorts for false advertising. SAN FRANCISCO -- A coalition of California cab companies can sue ride-booking service Uber for advertising that it offers the safest rides on the road, suggesting to riders that taxis are the more dangerous option to get around town. A federal judge in San Francisco ruled Friday that the cab companies could proceed with most of their case, denying in part Uber's motion to throw out the suit. The ruling handed a partial victory to the cab companies, which have for years vehemently opposed Uber and similar ride-booking companies like Lyft and Sidecar, which make smartphone apps that connect non-professional drivers with passengers. The services have rapidly become the preferred choice to traditional taxis in several cities. http://www.mercurynews.com/business/ci_28504884/judge-clears-way-cabs-sue-uber-over-false

Would anyone here take a self-driving Uber car on a trip? Google's self-driving cars are hitting the open road in Austin, Texas. The company has selected the city to be the next testing location for its autonomous Lexus SUVs, Google said in a Tuesday Google+ post. But don't expect to spot driverless cars whizzing past your favorite bar or BBQ joint in downtown Austin. Like in California, Google's self-driving cars will have a human onboard, ready to take over if there is an incident. It will also be contained to a few square miles north and northeast of downtown Austin. "It's important for us to get experience testing our software in different driving environments, traffic patterns, and road conditions—so we're ready to take on Austin's pedicabs, pickup trucks, and everything in between," Google said. "Keep it weird for us, Austin, and visit our website to let us know how we're driving." Google already has a presence in Austin; it rolled out Google Fiber there last year. Google has been testing its self-driving car technology using Lexus SUVs and Toyota Prius vehicles for some time now. Since Google tipped the project in 2010, its cars have driven over 1 million miles. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2487322,00.asp

Meanwhile in Jo'burg: JOHANNESBURG—Uber Technologies Inc. on Monday asked police to protect its drivers and passengers from taxi drivers in South Africa’s biggest city, who have lashed out at a company they say is cutting into their business. “Recent intimidation…only underlines why people are increasingly choosing safe, reliable alternatives like Uber,” the San Francisco-based company wrote on its website. Several Uber users reported being harassed into taking metered taxis in Johannesburg’s business district Sunday and Monday instead of the cars they had hailed via Uber’s smartphone app.

Now Jimboi, you won't be taking Uber when you alight from one of your G650's when flying into FLL, or Paris darling: Uber is suspending operations in Broward County at the end of the month due to its ongoing battle with the board of county commissioners, company officials said Monday. Calling Broward "one of the most hostile regulatory environments in the nation," Uber officials said they'll suspend operations beginning July 31. http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/Uber-Suspending-Operations-in-Broward-on-July-31-311815621.html http://www.autoblog.com/2015/07/04/uber-suspends-service-france/
  16. Dutchmuch says 'bullshit', these two didn't even mention their nefarious ways in Cali, and subsequent $800k fine. Whole Foods execs are admitting the chain has been overcharging customers in New York City stores, but promised that if that ever happens again they'll give the food to customers for free. John Mackey and Walter Robb, co-CEOs of Whole Foods (WFM), apologized to customers in a video filmed in the sliced fruit section of one of their grocery stores. The casually dressed execs admitted that some customers had been accidentally overcharged for sliced fruit, fresh squeezed juices and sandwiches by workers who made errors. http://money.cnn.com/2015/07/02/news/companies/whole-foods-overcharge-apology/ "Straight up, we made some mistakes," said Robb, , kiwis and pineapples. "We want to own that and tell you what we're doing about it."

  21. Rip-off on aisle four. The city has launched a probe of Whole Foods Markets after investigators nabbed the upscale food purveyor for routinely overcharging customers on groceries during dozens of inspections dating back to at least 2010, the Daily News has learned. The most recent spate of violations came during a sting operation the Department of Consumer Affairs conducted in the fall that specifically checked the accuracy of the weight marked on pre-packaged products. Inspectors weighed 80 different types of items at Whole Foods’ eight locations in the city that were open at the time. They found every label was inaccurate, with many overcharging consumers, agency spokeswoman Abby Lootens told The News. http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/exclusive-foods-faces-city-probe-overcharges-article-1.2268695
