Are you defining the "female role" as simply having babies, or something else, such as being the "bottom" during sex ? The lines of the female role today are blurred, and no longer what they were back in the day, so its important to know WHAT functions you are speaking of ? If we are speaking of Dominance, that role no longer defaults to the male. But I do believe that same sex couples DO take on roles, but they may not be traditional or boxed in.
