I’m glad I went to the Soane but can’t say it was my favorite. Rather claustrophobic I’d say. Maybe worth an hour . It is free so you can’t go too wrong.

I missed this show when it was at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts so was happy to catch up with it today at the Tate. Well worth the additional fee of 22 pounds I spent several hours viewing about 60 paintings many of which never travel. In addition to the paintings there were actual clothes that some of the sitters wore plus photos of Sargent and some of his friends. It’s a truly sumptuous show for any Sargent fans.

The jewels were in the Victoria & Albert Museum. It’s probably the finest jewelry collection in the world. I could have easily spent weeks in the V&A alone. There is a display of Raphael cartoons that were made for tapestries that are breath taking. There was also a collection of photographs from Elton John’s collection that we spent a few hours viewing. That was an additional fee of 22 pounds but the general admission to all museums was free.

It’s the dining room of the V&A. The walls and ceiling are covered in tile work. I stopped for a flat white.

In the last 2 days I’ve managed to squeeze in visits to parts of several London museums. The Soane, the British Museum, the V&A, the Wallace Collection and some of the Tate Modern. Happily they are mostly free except for some special exhibits. I’m pretty wiped out but it’s been amazing. I was there mostly when they opened and stayed till closing. Obviously I didn’t see everything but I did my best. I’ve got a few more days but I’ll need more future visits.

Right now I’m in Bristol staying with friends. In a few days we’ll be seeing one of the touring companies performing Hamilton which has received excellent reviews. I’ve never seen a live production just the filmed Disney production. However in a few days I’ll be in London and hoping to see some theater. I’d rather not see something I can see at home on Broadway. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I like both straight plays and musicals so open to just about anything. I’ll most likely be getting tickets at the last minute. Many thanks.

This did not get a very good review in The NY Times. Still it might be interesting to see it. I can’t help thinking there’s some connection to the Gaiety male burlesque theater which was run by a Greek woman who disappeared after the theater closed in 2005.

Some of you might be familiar with some of the porn theaters this woman used to own in NYC. Trying to find where to see the film. https://queenofthedeuce.com

Opera is also visual. At one point Pavarotti weighed 396 pounds. He was 71 when he died.
-
He was dressed like this for much of the opera. He sounds as good as he looks. I’m happy that the days of 300 pound opera singers is changing.

Hysterically funny play. I saw it twice when it was being performed. And Billy Magnussen is so hot and also brilliant as Spike. Many thanks for the heads up.

The opera hadn’t started. They were adjusting the set before it started. By the time the curtain rose it was a full house, at least in the orchestra where I was sitting. I was impressed how much of the audience was in formal attire. Nice to see some NY audiences still dress up. Makes for an attractive evening.

I have a ticket for Saturday, May 11, evening performance. It looks visually stunning and all the artists get fine reviews. I’m looking forward to seeing it https://www.metopera.org

I saw Appropriate. It’s good but not my favorite show this season. Cooper really liked The Outsiders. I haven’t seen it yet. But of all the shows I’ve seen this season Stereophonic is the clear winner.

Using the music of Sufjan Stevens, Justin Peck has choreographed a beautiful, heart breaking dance/play that’s unlike anything else on Broadway. IMG_6082.mov

What luck! I’ll be in London in early June.

It’s a brilliant piece of theater. Hard to believe none of the actors are professional musicians. They are now. It’s also quite funny and the pauses in conversation are as riveting as the dialogue. I think this will be the standout when the Tony’s are handed out. Highly recommended.

I was hoping the sky would get darker in NYC but it was still fun. People who had eclipse glasses were passing them around so all could see. It was a very convivial crowd. The Biennial exhibit had some interesting stuff and some not. Still worth a visit.

You’ve read the book. Probably have seen the movie(s) and now, ta dah, the musical. Both the leads, Jeremy Jordan and Eva Noblezada have powerful voices and used them full throttle in today’s performance. There were lots of 20’s inspired dance numbers performed by a really talented ensemble. Suitably sumptuous sets and costumes made the stage dazzle. IMG_5828.mov

I saw a terrific show today called Dead Outlaw. From the musical team who created The Band’s Visit this is a totally different and wonderfully weird story of a real not very accomplished outlaw named Elmer McCurdy. Shot and killed in a 1911 shootout, his mummified corpse spends the next 60 years as a sideshow exhibit traveling the country. Eventually his red-painted corpse is discovered hanging from a noose inside a California amusement park ride. With a rousing 6 piece band it stars Andrew Durand as McCurdy who blows the roof off the Minetta Lane Theater. The whole cast is great especially Thom Sesma as the corona Thomas Noguchi. The show has to close April 14 but I’m hoping it will transfer to Broadway. Still I’m glad I saw it in a smaller theater . https://deadoutlawmusical.com/
