And btw I tried Joe, an Asian guy, at the last minute and I had a really pleasant time! Quite enjoyed it. He has a bit of a gruff “bedside manner,” but he’s also sweet. I think a big factor is he barely speaks English so it’s tough for him to express himself.

I have an amazing LMT I see for therapeutic massages. For various forms of relaxation I go to places like Shangrila. I don’t recommend getting a “deep tissue massage” from there. I once got increased back tension from bad technique; my LMT fixed it. Since then I tell unlicensed masseurs to go light. And they do a great job. Having said all that, Rafa definitely has more skills than most. So I think you’d enjoy his massage if you do like a bit more of a therapeutic session. I’d def recommend seeing an LMT for a proper therapeutic massage though.

I saw him back on the schedule as Lucas at Shangrila. Haven’t confirmed with him, the spa, or any clients yet that it’s the same person but I’m guessing it is.

I don't know why you would say that. I literally saw him, and he's there today, for example. Also was given his name by one of the owners when I was checking in about scheduling an appt. Anyway, highly recommended!

I tried Rafa and he was excellent. He’s lean and muscular with a dramatic v-shape — huge chest and tiny waist. Beard. Very pleasant personality. And the massage was quite good. He doesn’t overdo it with the oil; he uses rather little.

I agree with you about massage quality. I do not think of this as a place where one should go for proper massage therapy. These staff members are not licensed. I prefer that they use light strokes and focus on relaxation rather than therapy bc I wouldn’t want them to cause damage. (I did get some tension in my back from one of the massages.) That said, you can always request an adjustment to the pressure. I regularly see an incredible LMT in my home city and what’s done at Shangri La is amateurish. However, the staff members do things that my LMT does not, and it’s a wonderful environment.

Wanted to follow up and report that Lucas was fantastic. Highly recommend. He’s young and very handsome, muscular, chill, kind. He did not once mention tips; Ricardo did (though it didn’t bother me too much bc it was my first time there and I didn’t mind hearing some info about expectations). I really like the staff and the vibe of the place.
