Aside from providers, other businesses where I go in which the owner provides the service is the hair salon (been going to her for fifteen years) and my pet groomer (been going to her for five years). I don't tip any of them, since they are the owners. However, what I do all the time is RECOMMEND them to others - including providers I book with regularly. (I'm very good at recommending and promoting small businesses, being a small business owner myself). I think the problem is there's not enough ad. For someone who is new and has no reviews, he needs more editorial to sell himself - since no reviews are doing it for him. At $500, he needs to be more informative about himself.

You're fortunate you were in a hotel and not meeting him in your residence, and the hotel had the precaution of not letting visitors up to your room without you accompanying them. That said, you should have taken advantage of those precautions - I, too, would've left him in the lobby and let him know his appearance wasn't what he lead you to believe in his ads, and there was no attraction. Simple as that - and politely walk away. At least, that is what I would have done.
