This is was David Lean's penultimate film. It came out like 6 years out after Dr Zhivago and the reception so disturbed him that he didn't make another movie until 1984's Passage to India. It's now out on DVD.

Has anyone here seen it? What are your thoughts? Worthwhile?? I always liked Mitchum. I'm also a big Lean fan.

Ryan's Daughter is a beautiful movie, that, unfortunately, doesn't play too well outside of a theater. At the time of it's release, the critics praised it's look and the location shooting, but almost all agreed that there simply wasn't enough story to merit it's "epic" treatment. They were probably right. It's a very intimate love story told on the grandest scale possible. Still, if you like Lean's work, it's well worth seeing. Mitchum plays very well against type as a shy, kind schoolteacher and Sarah Miles is lovely as the title character. Enjoy!
