On the radio news they said that people are having to evacuate on the big island of Hawaii.

On the New Zealand soap opera "Shortland Street" one storyline dealt with a volcano. Quite dramatic with the ash falling and darkness spreading.

Was in Sicily many years ago a few weeks after Etna erupted. One could still see the lava glowing and flowing down the side of the volcano at night from Taormina. Due to the eruption one could not visit high up the mountain, but we were able to get as far as the Silvestri crater. It was a bit scary tossing a bit of lava in to the crater and never hearing it hit bottom!

Incidentally I read my home owners policy after hurricane Irma. There is a separate “named storm deductible”, but I am totally covered for volcanic eruption! Go figure!

Was a hundred miles down wind (northeast) when Mt. St. Helens blew in 1980. We heard the blast but it took a couple hours for the ash to make it to my city- closed up almost everything for several days. Have not experienced lava tho- a friend's parents have had to evacuate their home on the big island due to safety concerns about lava- just can't imagine that!
