To the Best of My Recollection, This is the story I heard:

Years ago (early to mid 80's? Not too many years after his was a popular name in the business) he gave an interview to a foreign publication wherein he made a negative comment about gays, calling them something like perverts or something. He explained it by saying that they take it up the butt, AND illustrating it (since the interviewer was foreign? I dunno) by turning around and pointing up his ass.

That's my memory of it. Can't recall he ever recanted but I do recall him trying to have some sort of "summit" with the community. Don't remember if it happened or what came of it if it did happen.

That's about the gist of the story. He did an interview with gosip columnist Liz Smith some time later claiming he was seriously quoted out of context. He also gave the "some of my best friends are gay" line in that interview and acknowledged that there were a number of gays in the motion picture business. The other interesting thing is that Liz Smith is a lesbian but she did not seem to give him too much flack over the issue. I could be wrong on this but its what I recall from about 10 years ago.

Mel Gibson has let his dislike of gays be known on multiple occasions. It's definitely no secret:

--Gibson has been the darling of conservatives long before his historically-challenged film, "The Patriot" whitewashed the American Revolution: He has been stalwart in his opposition to abortion; he favors capital punishment; has opposed birth control; and has occasionally put his foot in his mouth over gay and lesbian issues.

"They take it up the ass," Gibson told the Spanish publication El Pais in a January 1992 interview, as he bent over and pointed to his rear-end. "This is only for taking a shit," he said.

--Some gay rights groups have accused Gibson of homophobia for his alleged Traditionalist Catholic views on homosexuality. In a 1992 interview, when asked what he thought of gay people, he said, "They take it up the ass." Gibson then bent over and pointed to his buttocks, saying "This is only for taking a shit." When the interviewer recalled that Gibson previously had expressed fear people would think he is gay because he's an actor, Gibson responded in saying "Do I sound like a homosexual? Do I talk like them? Do I move like them?" Gibson later defended his comments on Good Morning America, saying "I don't think there's an apology necessary, and I'm certainly not giving one. [Those remarks were a response] to a direct question. If someone wants my opinion, I'll give it. What, am I supposed to lie to them?"

--Gibson was accused of homophobia once more in his movies with his portrayal of Herod Antipas in The Passion of the Christ. Antipas is portrayed as an effeminate homosexual, complete with a "boy-toy". Although this was a common caricature of Herod in medieval Passion plays, it does not appear in the Gospels and is contrary to the historical record regarding Antipas.

--Hollywood star MEL GIBSON is ashamed of his first ever onscreen kiss - because it was with another man in a cheap movie.

The BRAVEHEART hunk made SUMMER CITY, his first feature film, during his graduation year at Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art.

But he complains he never received the $450 (GBP250) he was promised for performing the "embarrassing" movie scene with Australian STEVE BISLEY.

I always assumed that he WAS homophobic but I'm not really sure where I got that impression (other than reading the same news reports as mentioned elsewhere in this thread)

However his strong Catholic leanings might indicate that he subscribes to the same homo bullshit that the Vatican spews.

I recall seeing him on Dame Edna's show a few years ago and he seemed to be very chummy with her (him). He even was shown in a sauna with just a towel for modesty. Of course, as most of us know, Dame Edna is really Barry Humphries who I also presumed was gay - until I learned he had been married four times and had several children - so who knows anymore?

BRAVEHEART, which (S)Mel(l) directed, produced, and starred in, contains a highly offensive portrayal of a gay man -- whinny, effeminate, weak. Another character picks up the gay man and heaves him out a window to his death (and to the delight of some members of the audience). Apparently, the caricature has no basis in historical fact. Gibson was unapologetic.

The worst revenge of all takes place: (S)Mel(l) is losing his looks -- terrible dye job.

>I agree. He won't get my money for a ticket -- and probably

>he wouldn't want it either, homophobic as he is.

Wrong - I bet he wants every buck he can get his hands on and if he knew it was coming from what he would describe as a "cocksucker", it would probably please him even more.

Come On Already : Mel Gibson: Homophobe?

Come on already? What do you expect? He directed the Last Temptation of Christ or somethign like that... wasn't it The last days, final judgment, well ... Mel has basically gone up against other Christian organization over the movie, Jewish organizations, Catholic, and he has a family larger than some small farms... Like 13 or 14 kids. His father believes the holocaust is a lie and has gone on camera to say as much.

Yeah, I would say Mel's a homophobe, conservative Catholic, who has never worn a condom a day in his life. Long live Mel!!! I heard from a popular source of a model that once worked with him that Mel switches his mind faster than than the gears of a twin engine. He's bipolar man. What do you think makes him such a good actor.

My pal, Wendy, knew him. She started off as a model in Australia. Mel is NOW conservative and rumored "blacklisted" in Hollywood after that Jesus film. but he always makes a comeback because he switches attitudes faster than a child with a remote control television on a high speed cable connection:7

Well now - that's debateable as hell.
