I was watching "The Alienist" and someone used that expression. At one time mercury was used as a cure for syphilis.

In a recent episode of "Victoria" Prince Albert's brother was shown going for the mercury cure.

For gays rather than Venus who would be the deity?

Mars.

Some gods had same sex lovers - Jupiter, Neptune, Apollo, Bacchus - but I'm not familiar with any same-sex lovers that Mars had.

Wouldn't it be Eros/Cupid? He was usually depicted in Greek and Roman art as a young man, not as a chubby baby. Eros/Cupid doesn't carry the same allusion to venereal disease that Venus does, though.

Despite the story of Cupid and Psyche I like to think that Cupid and Ganymede were lovers. They were the two youngest on Olympus, teenagers amongst the old deities. I remember reading some story about Jason and the Argonauts when Juno goes to visit Venus to get Cupid to make Medea fall in love with Jason, Cupid and Ganymede are in the garden playing some game.
