in order of appearance: Angela Lansbury, Barbara Cook, Bernadette Peters, Mary Martin, Catherine Preston 1987 Tony Awards.

 

Mary also presented a special Tony to Yul Brynner a few years earlier.

 

Yul died shortly after, but did well that night. Martin and Brynner worked together on Broadway in the musical "Lute Song." She suggested Yul for the role of the king in the "King and I." Rodgers and Hammerstein agreed.

I was very lucky to see Mary Martin perform in New York Boston and Philadelphia. Still I am not surprised she had trouble mentioning her late husband's name. He ran her life so Mary could completely concentrate on the performance.
