Anyone happen to see this film last night on TNT? It's called "The Score."

The movie features Brando, Ed Norton, and Robert DeNiro.

Some of the film takes place in Montreal.

It was cool to recognize the bridge next to club Taboo at the end of the film.

I watehed this film a few years back just for the sole purpose of watching screen legend Marlon Brando and Bobby DeNiro interact as performers. Once DeNiro's character was killed off, that did it for me. It just basically killed my interest in the film.

It used to be that when a studio announced a motion picture that would be starring Robert DeNiro, there was a general buzz and excitement that was created. Somehow that changed within the 1990's. After he made Casino in 1995 with Martin Scorsese, he just churned out one film after another. In turn it sort of diluted the myth of Bobby DeNiro. Dont get me wrong he's done some great work in films like " A Bronx Tale ", Marvin's Room, Ronnin, Analyze This & That ( kill two birds with one stone ), Meet The Parents, City By The Sea, Meet The Fockers, offcourse starring opposite Al Pacino in Heat in which his character was very much the anti-hero. Incidentally all these films listed above more or less cover the last 15 years odd years of DeNiro's career.

To sort of go further back in time, one of my personal favorite DeNiro films alongside Taxi Driver and Raging Bull has always been Brian DePalma's " The Untouchables ". It's been almost

nineteen years now when the film first premiered and still very much has stood the test of time as a great classic. As for a film like " The Score ", I would certainly never classify it as a DeNiro pastiche. It's a pity though that he had to be involved in the project.

Coincidentally, I was visiting Montreal on the weekend it opened a few years back and had the experience of watching it with a Montreal audience. I was not even aware of the film until I was checking the newspaper over breakfast and read a decent review from one of the local papers. My partner and I enjoyed visiting some of the locales over the next couple of days remembering which streets/landmarks were used in the film. (lots of time in Old Montreal that trip)

But certainly, if the (film) bar is being set at RAGING BULL, THE UNTOUCHABLES and GOODFELLAS, then THE SCORE will not register. Although we found it a pleasant diversion for a couple hours and DeNiro, Brandon and Edward Norton certainly played a big part in elevating the material.

It's a good movie for fans of the city, who cannot visit as often as they'd like and want a quick fix. :-)

It seems like DeNiro has been more interested in collecting a check than doing serious work lately. What was that bomb with Dakota Fanning all about?

As for The Score, this was a "troubled production" from the start. There were major fights with Brando and Frank Oz the director. It got so bad that Oz and Brando could not be on the same set. Rumors had it that Oz was having to give instructions to an assistant director who would then "ask" Mr. Brando to play the scene the way the director requested. Which of course Brando would ignore and it went on and on for the whole shoot.

I'm not sure if it was Brando or Oz that was the catalyst but several of Frank Oz's films have had similar issues. Bowfinger with Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy and The Stepford Wives with Nicole Kidman had similar issues between the cast and director.
