Message Board Software?

Is "software" even the right term?

 

PLEEZE don't turn this thread into another war between sites. I think I have a legitimate question here:

 

Why do I have to use fucking html when I post on this site, whereas on the Brand X site, the html seems to be "built in?"

 

My conclusion is that this site's software is antiquated to say the least. Am I wrong?

Yes, I think it's wrong to say this software is antiquated. Message Board software keeps evolving, just like other software. At any given time, various packages have certain strengths and certain weaknesses.

 

DCScripts is a very highly-regarded and widely used package. It's extremely efficient and can handle large forums with lots of members -- like this one. It also has very flexible and efficient threading mechanism, as you can see.

 

The software used at EZBoard has different strengths and weaknesses. It's terrible with threading and, because of that, is generally run only in a non-threaded mode. It's also slower and less efficient, even when used with small boards. EZBoards are generally thought to be kind of slow.

 

It's like anything else. Nothing is perfect and you have to try to pick the software that will work best for your needs. However, once chosen, it's often hard to switch from one format to another without losing all of the messages on the board. That's why sites generally don't switch back and forth as the various packages offer new releases with new features. There's also the issue of familiarity with the software on the part of the board's users.

 

In a nutshell, this is a good, modern package that is capable of managing a large board for lots of users in an efficient, effective manner. And that's one of the most important things: if a board is slow, no one cares about anything else.

This Board is ok but more options for what users want is what can improve anything.

 

On a scale from 1 - 10 I give this web app a 5
