There are many jokes about San Francisco cold foggy summers. What many don't realize is that, travelling due east from the Pacific Coast, as you cross each small range of hills, the temperature climbs. I'm less than 27 miles from the ocean.

 

It was 108° yesterday. Its 100 now, and will climb through the afternoon. I have AC, but nothing really keeps pace with 108!

There is already such a service and it comes from the most unlikely quarter. The Cobourg Police Service in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada offers any passersby air conditioned comfort in the summer or a place to warm up in winter on very comfortable couches. The renovated station has a unisex shower so the homeless can keep clean with provision of free toiletries and even a change of clothes if needed. The Service is even a prime mover for Cobourg's first Pride festival this Friday.
