The "Nordic Model" of criminalization of prostitution refers to a system in which "selling" is decriminalized, but "purchasing" remains illegal.

 

My question for clients (mostly) is - if that system were applied here in the US, what effect would it have on your participation of forums/review sites?

Interesting question. I did not know that was the Nordic model. Is it only fully legal in Holland?

 

To answer your question, probably not unless the police state got very aggressive. I would need first-hand evidence of actual prosecutions before I changed my behavior.

Sweden is a country following that model. The provider doesn't commit any crime. However, those who solicit services are subject to arrest.

As I understand your hypothetical, the legal status would be the same as it is now for the so-called “purchaser,” so I’m not sure why it would necessarily have any effect for them. It is illegal to pay for sex now, and it would still be illegal with the “Nordic” approach.

 

What I think has a much greater potential to impact participation on review sites etc. is how questions of free speech and the Internet are handled in the future, the extent to which websites might be held accountable for content posted by third parties in the future, and of course whether any entitlement to privacy in our digital communications will gradually whither away to nothing in the future. In all these areas, there are very disturbing trends. So that’s why things like the Gawker case, the Airbnb controversy, and James Comey’s crusade to unlock iPhones may end up having as much impact as adoption of the “Nordic model.”
