After being talked into watching Boogeyman last Friday night and very much regretting it. I was very keen to watch something more dramatical and certainly not a cheesy horror flick. I finally got my chance. Late night I had a chance to see a new movie that opened this past weekend titled " Swimming Upstream ". I really enjoyed this film a lot.

The movie itself is based on a true story. It's set in the 1960's and it's about one of Australia's all time great swimmers Tony Singleton. His upbringing, his relationship with his siblings and parents. His choice of swimming to please his alcoholic abusive father are at the center stage of the storyline. Geoffrey Rush and Judy Davis play the parents flawlessly. Both performers really shined and brought strength to their characters. Jesse Spencer played the role of Tony Singleton. He is definitely eye candy and worth taking a look at. His performance in the movie was absolutely fantastic. To those who might be curious, Jesse was on the long running Australian show Neighbors for six years. Now he's recently been starring on House M.D for the Fox Network in the States. He stars opposite one of Britains finest exports to the States Hugh Laurie ( Jeevers & Woosters ). It's an interesting show to watch.

For me besides the performances in " Swimming Upstream ", the themes of being forced to be competetive to the nature of having an alcoholic father and the physical abuse that came with it definitely hit close to home for me. The movie itself was released in 2003, but only last year did MGM in the States decide to release the movie to the North American market. I for one am very glad, it's a film that really deserves a chance at the box office. It would be a shame if more people dont see it. It's a movie worth taking a good look at.
