Option to restrict access to phone number on Rentmen

Is this something new?

 

I recently went to "Contact Me" of a guys ad, and when I clicked to get the phone number, the response was:

 

"Phone is not available for not registered users! In order to see phone number you need to Login or Register"

 

I checked few other ads, and they all displayed the phone number, so it seems to be an option for the guy to choose.

I don't think it's new, and I know it's been around for at least a few months. That's when I noticed a gentlemen advertising on RM who had chosen not to make either a phone number or email contact available to non-registered users of that webpage. There was literally no way to contact him via the RM webpage without first registering with the site (which obviously many people are reluctant to do). I suppose he might consider non-registered folks to be less serious and/or accountable, but I suspect he’s missing out on a lot of potential clients that way. What is really curious is that when I noticed this some months ago, he was simultaneously advertising on BP and I think he included his phone # in that ad, so it was as though he was trying to be highly selective yet un-selective at the same time. I find it all very strange, but maybe there is some business reason behind it that I just don’t understand.

I being one of them. Haven't had much luck using RM's email system. Not too disappointed at this point, as I was only windowshopping, and was just going to do a google search of the phone number.
