Since Ivan is taking a westerly course and leaving us alone in Fort Lauderdale, I decided to drive down to Miami Beach today for lunch. It is about 45 minutes south of here. In the center of town, near the Jackie Gleason Theater which has a very busy calendar of cultural events all year long and lots of easy parking, the city has taken one of its busiest streets, Lincoln Road, and turned ten blocks of it into a pedestrian mall.

It works wonderfully and attracts great numbers of people, especially on pleasant weekends like this. There are many outdoor restaurants, pools, fountains, trees, flowers, fruit vendors, flower sellers, shops, and art galleries along the mall. There are French, Italian, Asian, and American restaurants. There are two large artist-run buildings with more than 40 artists and their studios, which you are welcome to visit. It is a great pleasure to walk through and talk with the artists about what they are doing.

The most famous local/international artist is Romero Britto, who came originally from Brazil but has lived in Miami Beach for seventeen years. He has his official/home gallery along the mall, and he works in his studio upstairs. He is well known, among other reasons, for the Absolut Vodka ads which he did.
