Curcumas and Cannas

The purple Curcumas and the orange Cannas are pretty spectacular, but the various Vincas and the pale Plumbagos are very pretty also. The Curcumas are related to the ginger plant and are sometimes called "hidden gingers." Click on any image to enlarge.

Various vincas? Pale plumbagos? My goodness, such alliteration. Here in the Bay Area, the cannas have been spectacular this year. A little extra warmth this past Spring allowed them some grace of growth... they are a foot or more taller than usual. My "Bangkok Yellows" are topping out at seven feet! Curcumas, unfortunately, are not to be seen here, as a rule. Our mild, rainy winters simply rot out the dormant rhizomes.
