The fashion industry has been slow embracing fat and trans women as models. I sometimes wonder which of of the two the biggest taboo is. Or is it all just clever marketing?

For an insightful article about fat models, here is an interesting NYT piece:

And somebody named 'Peche' opened the first trans modelling agency in NY:

In any event, it is refreshing to see that the fats and the trans need as much 'help' as the regular models do. With plummeting fees for models and flat to negative sales for most fashion houses, any sort of innovation makes business sense ...

I clicked on this thinking it was something about regular fat and trans-fats. Oy!

Having said that, I think your last sentence answered the question - its all about clever marketing, getting exposure, and thus hopefully getting the sale. Though to be honest, I'm not sure how successful - long term - it will be. Good luck to all the aspiring models, I hope they have a realistic grasp of their true chances at being the fat or trans Naomi and the rest.
