Awhile ago, I joined a local choir because they performed Handel's Messiah every year, but before we did that, we performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the local (unpaid) symphony. Even though I knew the melody of the Ode to Joy from the hymn "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee," singing the original in German with orchestral accompaniment was powerful and moving.

 

Also, Fur Elise was one of the earliest piano compositions I learned to play well enough to be proud of. (Bach and Debussy are more my speed.)
