Since Gman posted a Glee cover of Beyonce's "Halo," I figured I might as well post some. Here's the one that introduced me to the song.

(That's Minzy of 2NE1, for those of you who don't know.)

Here's a bluesier version by Hyorin of girl group Sistar, which woefully underuses her vocal talents.

Here's Beyonce in a similarly informal setting.

Wonderful...

She is really great and hugely talented. (I've seen her and her group -- she's Sistar's leader -- on a subtitled music/variety show, so I have some sense of her personality, too.) Her agency/record label has her and her group sing

with Girl's Generation trademark breathy voices and turns down the songs she writes because they're too bluesy and not mainstream enough. Idiots.

How about something bluesy or Madonna? Or maybe a lil old school country?

Hugs,

Greg

I'm not that familiar with pure country. Will traditional folk music do? I have this on my YouTube watch later list for some reason I no longer remember.

Here's Neil Young and Crazy Horse playing "Down by the River," which is the same idea lyrically (and sounds like a folk tune rather than a composed tune) but leans more towards rock/blues.

Okay, so Neil was cuter back in the day, but he's still freaking talented. The studio original is about 8 minutes long, but I thought a live version would be more interesting to watch. The tempo's also slower.

More of a Lady Gaga fan than a Madonna fan, but I like "Material Girl" and "Express Yourself."

To quote Tablo of Epik HIgh, "No genre. Just music."

I could make an argument for trot (short for "foxtrot"), the first style of Korean popular music (as opposed to folk music), being equivalent to country. As this Epik High song titled "Trot" says, it's what you sing (or listen to) when you're sad. ("Hip hop, dance, pop, ballad, it's all good, but when you're sad...") It's also what Koreans often sing at karoke (or, in Korean, noraebang).

Live performance (the bearded guy singing is Mithra Jin; he usually raps, not sings, but he's got a better singing voice than Tablo, the other rapper, who's the one who usually sings).

This MV parodying the Korean horror movie The Host is a hoot but it doesn't feature the entire song. Watch Beasty Mithra sing his lament by the Han River at the end. The guy with the bow is DJ Tukutz, who also has a fine singing voice. The line "life is pain" that Tablo recites at the beginning of the song could be the Korean national motto.

As for the blues: I was up late watching videos. Here's Hyorin (name sometimes romanized as Hyolyn) and SoYou of Sistar singing Christina Aguilera's "Hurt":

2NE1 has several songs that qualify. "If I Were You" is one that was co-written by leader CL. That's Minzy to the left. Her voice sounds much stronger than in her rendition of "Halo." And CL, whose voice is underrated, sings her heart out.

"Lonely" is one of their most popular songs.

Lee Hi, who came in second place the first season of Kpopstar, singing "It's Over," a song I wasn't aware of until I was looking for Lee Hi songs last night:

Park Jimin, who won the first season of Kpopstar over Lee Hi, singing a cover of "Rolling in the Deep" for the judges, two of whom are the heads of two of the big 3 record/management companies (and one of whom still performs himself) and the third of whom is a well-known artist from the third company:

Madonna is harder to find comparisons to. No one's music (that I know) is all that similar to hers. Although kpop is heavily influenced by dance music, it's more EDM/hip pop/house-oriented than Madonna.

if you're looking for an artist who is equally as shocking and sexual, at least one person has compared JYP -- the record label head who still performs -- to Madonna. But being male makes it a lot different.

The closest I can come is Ga-In of the Brown Eyed Girls. The middle song is a Brown Eyed Girls song; and BEG's rapper Miryo shows up to perform with her. The last song -- "Paradise Lost" -- has some of the same religious imagery that Madonna uses. (The MV for it, which I also like, has a CGI snake.)

The MV for "Bloom"(rated 19+ for adult and yes, she's miming masturbation) makes the comparison to Madonna even clearer.

She also has a song called "F**k U" (featuring Bumkey) about an abusive relationship.

And another song called "

," which I just remembered is the name of a Madonna album.

Then there's Troublemaker, which is a duo comprised of Hyuna from 4minute and Hangseung from Beast (same label). Their performance of their first single, "Troublemaker," caused quite a stir, particularly for where Hangseung's hands were. Also keep an eye on the backup dancers.

I can't leave without dropping the MV for 2NE1's "Can't Nobody" in which CL grabs her (invisible) dick. Don't know what else to call it; it's not her crotch. That's Minzy doing body rolls to "I'm so bad, but I'm so good/I'm so bad and I'm so hood" at fifteen.

For Park Bom in the most feminine dominatrix outfit ever (with poodle!), watch the video of their most famous song, "

." And the group has performed a
for selected guys (in this case, Filippino celebrities Dara, who used to lived in the Philippines, knows) at concerts without any noticeable controversy, which for Korea is huge.

I actually hadn't heard the song until I saw it on Glee-Beyoncé not being one of my favorite performers. Here's the video for it.

Apparently there was an alternate ending where it shows the guy being a thief and getting shot dead at the last-all with Beyoncé unknowing and singing how the dead guy is her saving grace.

I'm not sure what to say about this.

#1. At the beginning her English was awful. It improved towards the end, and I don't think it was just me getting used to her accent.

#2. I also thought initally that the song was outside her range. But then she was able to handle some of the higher notes. I'm wondering if her voice is just overstrained. It may also be that the song is technically too difficult for her to manage with her vocal range. On the parts she wasn't struggling for the note, it sounded nice.

Beyonce is not one of my faves, either, which is why I wasn't familiar with this song. I like the audio of her MV for it. The video, not so much.

As for Minzy's performance: No, it's not perfect. Minzy herself would probably be the first person to admit that. (Her bandmember Sandara Park has been quoted as apologizing for not being the most talented person in the group and vowing to work even harder.) It was done as a Christmas present for her fans.

It's harder to nail a song in one take, especially one you're not being paid to sing and therefore haven't rehearsed to death. She was clearly nervous and hesitant at the beginning and got into more of a groove toward the end. Also, this was from 2011, when Minzy was 17. Her voice has matured since then. Listen to her sing live with her 2NE1 bandmates in the videos of "If I Were You" and "Lonely."

In person, Minzy is probably the shyest and most reserved member of 2NE1. (She's also the only one not fluent in English.) But when she dances ... Watch her blow everyone else away in this dance battle from 2009, the year she and 2NE1 debuted, when she was fifteen and younger than all of the others:

There's also this video of her twerking to Missy Elliott's "Work It."
