After the 1983 film with Albert Finney and Tom Courtenay, I would have thought there was nothing more to say in this Ronald Harwood play. But the BBC presented a new version starring Ian McKellen, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Watson, Sarah Lancashire, and Edward Fox over the weekend. It was outstanding.

 

It takes Hopkins a while to warm up, but he then gives a terrific performance. McKellen is outstanding from beginning to end. It's nice to see Fox who was in the original from 1983 in a different -- and very moving -- role this time.

 

Highly recommended to all.
