Although I personally stick with one airline so that I can get free upgrades or use miles for upgrading international flights, if I were paying cash and not concerned about loyalty, Alitalia seems to have a good product. If you're flying from the US to Italy as your final destination, it would be silly to fly another European airline and have to change planes if you have the money to pay for Alitalia business. It looks as if the seats are all lay-flat horizontal, and that most of the seats seem to have direct aisle access. You could, of course, verify this for your particular flight.

Alitalia’s New Business Class

  • Restaurant-style ‘Dine Anytime’ service, and a “personalized”, “unobtrusive” meal service by cabin crew. No more trolleys.
  • Spuntino menu, with a selection of snacks to be enjoyed throughout the flight.
  • Italian and International wine selection.
  • Meals served on Richard Ginori fine bone china and silverware.
  • A fully lie-flat Business Class seat (possibly borrowed), with turndown service on all Airbus A330 and Boeing 777 flights.
  • Bedtime beverage (cocoa?) and an appointment made for a wake-up and breakfast.
  • ‘Piccola Colazione’ quick breakfast on shorter flights.

I did RT business on Alitalia fom Boston in 1996 and 2007.

The seats were very comfortable for the time. IN 1996, they weren't todays recliners, but exceptionally fine. In 2007, they were standard.

The food, however, was incredible. Best gnocchi I've ever had.k

Here's a more current review. I love this site!

I realize that you are traveling to Itaty but I have found that Virgin Atlantic's points for miles program to be one of the best. For Europe, they only fly into London. They are a partner airline of American Express. For example: most airlines out of Philadelphia to Europe are requiring up to 400,000 points for RT first class seats. Virgin Atlantic (from NYC, Newark NJ, DC) requires 80,000 points. I think thier pricing for revenue seats are equally as competitive.

The service is exceptional. Their lounges here and in London are great; fun, modern, great food, bar, etc. The service and seating on-board is truly great. Looks like very similar seating to Al Italia. Often when I need to travel to Europe I fly into London taking Virgin's early morning (approximately 7:20 AM flight), stay at the Sofitel at Heathrow to kill the jet lag and then train or fly into the city where I am going the next moring feeling fresh. It's a extra stop, but at those rates and prices it feels worth it.

I flew from Milan to JFK with multiple broken ribs in coach class. That was it as far as availability less than 48 hours after my accident in July. Alitalia could not have treated me better ( upgrades were not available).

I do remember waking up that morning dreading getting to the airpost and the flight, but the airline help me while flying and in Milan and also JFK. They even took care of changing my money to dollars.

Never flown on Alitalia since (use Lufthansa because of that airtline's destinations), but if I was treated that well in coach.......
