Looks as if the English are once again at it. Personally, if passed, I do not feel this would be such a bad law. After all 16 year olds can legally have sex in England. So why put a restriction on pronography?

Teen sex law bid is blasted

 

 

Powys children could have satchels "stuffed with sex toys and dirty videos" if new laws to allow teenagers as young as 16 to view pornography get the go-ahead, a politician has claimed.

 

Mid and West Wales assembly member Glyn Davies has hit out at proposals to liberalise the pornography laws for 16-year-olds which were approved at the Liberal Democrats spring conference at the weekend.

 

Culture spokesman Don Foster had championed the softer line on porn.

 

He said 16 and 17 year olds were "living in a twilight zone between childhood and adulthood", gaining different rights at different ages.

 

He asked why should 16-year-olds be allowed to have sex and babies and under other party policies vote and earn the minimum wage, but not watch or take part in explicit material.

 

But the NSPCC and the Church of England have expressed concerns.

 

A Church of England spokesman said it was opposed to all pornography because of the issue of exploitation.

 

Angela Perkins, of the National Board of Catholic Women, said: "For a political party to say we think 16 is an adequate age to release children on to pornography is irresponsible. It's going backwards to the 18th century."

 

And Mr Davies said the libertarian attitude towards pornography did not represent the people of Powys.

 

"Recently we saw the Liberal Democrats supporting the liberalisation of the laws on cannabis use and now they want to make the most disgusting pornography legal for 16-year-olds," he said.

 

"If Liberal Democrats were to have their way, the school satchels of Powys children would be stuffed with sex toys and dirty videos and their pockets would be loaded with cannabis."

 

But Montgomeryshire MP Lembit Opik said: "I wonder if the Tories can explain why they oppose this but have no plans to outlaw sex between 16-year-olds, marriage between 16-year-olds, the raising of children by 16-year-olds or 16-year-olds joining the Army."

 

Mr Opik questioned why 18-year-olds could read pornography, but not 17-and-a half year olds.
