...My impression was that he didn’t think the appointment was going to be worth $500 to him.

This is true. I suspect I'm like many others in that sometimes it's more about feeling that you've made a wise purchase than about what you can afford. Once I took a moment to think about it, I realized that, in no way, was the very vanilla encounter that I had discussed with this guy worth $500. He's done some fitness modeling as well as some porno work and probably views himself as a very premium commodity. It's this fitness modeling and porn work that put him on my radar screen but it still did not make him worth his price tag -- at least for me.

I realize that this is an uncomfortable situation for many people here. However, in many parts of the world negotiating (let's not use the judgmental-sounding term "haggling") is how business is handled. Even in the US people negotiate when purchasing a house or a car. Some sole proprietor business owners may negotiate with buyers to encourage a sale - I'm thinking of the antiques market or even the art market. Even with hiring new workers there may be some negotiating - it really happens in the US more than we think. On another related note, most retailers will allow you to return merchandise that you may ultimately decide you don't want - such as that pair of shoes or gloves, etc.

It seems to me that our OP was not really thinking clearly at the time of the initial call, but rapidly came to his senses after hanging up - this is nothing more than buyer's remorse - he decided that for his activities, $8.33 per minute (and let's be fair - the minutes fly by pretty quickly in these encounters) wasn't worth it to him. The OP called his guy back in 10 minutes to cancel - it's unlikely that the escort missed an opportunity in that time span.

The problem seems to involve two points:

1) $500 was more than the OP thought it was worth; and,

2) he was timely in exercising an option to cancel - I know, I know there is no such thing. But shouldn't there be?

2)
