Hi Chris!

I always enjoy reading what you write. I have noticed when this topic comes up, both sides of the spectrum are passionate about the discussion. Please continue to share your knowledge and not be discouraged by those with opposing opinions.

I am thinking about Prep but not sure if I would be a good candidate as I only have one kidney. I guess I would have to discuss that with my doctor.

P.S. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

There are side effects for prep and your right to be concerned about them especially if you have one kidney. That being said its very rare to have side effects and monthly blood work is done for the first couple months of taking prep to make sure is not causing any issues. I would share your concerns with your health care provider and see what they have to say. There are a few other factors that play into getting a Prep prescription, the big one that a lot of my friends have struggled with is, "Is what I am doing risky enough to warrant going on this medication?". That can mean anything from barebacking to having sex protected sex with high risk individuals like escorts. I hate to burst any bubbles but escorts do get around...

My opinions come from a public health stand point, harm reduction and education are the most effective tools in my option. If your going to bareback by all means enjoy but be smart about who you play with, don't play with IV drug users or for that matter anyone using crystal meth, and for the love of god if your having sex on a regular basis get tested. This once every 3 months stuff is for the birds, I go in and get tested once a month. Why so often do you ask? Because I am a responsible adult and part of being a sexually active adult is taking care of your health.

Every once and a while your weiner gets a case of the sniffles and you have to go get treated. This doesn't mean your a bad person or that you have done something immoral it means you have done a human thing, you had sex. Its not a big deal you take 7 days off and go read a book.

The question I would like to pose to you guys and especially the pearl clutchers (you know who you are) is, when does pleasure factor into the discussion about sex and sexual practices? Does intimacy? What about mental health?

Although officially the vaccine is only cleared for up to 26 year olds, I recommend EVERY sexually active man and woman at least be tested be tested; if negative, get the vaccine. And I know a lot of you are NOT doing this.

Thanks for your post, funguy.

I did the Gardasil vaccine. My doctor told me that most sexually active men and women have already been exposed to some strains of HPV and to be fully effective the shot should be done when you start your sexually active life (actually 3 shots). I paid full price and the vaccine wasn't covered by the insurance. Still, I'm glad I did it. Thank you and Gman for the reminders.

PS: Speaking of vaccines: every man who have sex with men should get Hepatitis A and B vaccine

I have many POZ friends. Being undetectable on HAART treatment today doesn't carry the same burden as a decade or two ago.

POZ folks have great sexual lives and function normally: just like you and me. Many people with HIV live long and productive lives.

The ED problem you're referring to may be caused by a different factor. I'm not aware that HIV drugs cause erectile dysfunction. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Steven,

Thanks for the info, buddy as what you've informed me on is good to share that not everyone who is on HIV meds have ED problems. I do know they're are people who are on HIV medications and do "party" when having sex. Maybe these guys who be telling me this are under the influence of drugs, and are forgetting that you will have ED of course while doing meth.

Well here's a development that's bound to set heads around here exploding. Los Angeles county will begin the distribution of PrEP to local low income residents.

The key details are as follows:

"Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, who proposed the plan, said that "together with other HIV prevention tools, it’ll make it possible for us to dramatically reduce new HIV infections."

"PrEP is not a silver bullet, it’s not a panacea, but it is another tool that we need to offer our county residents who are at high risk of contracting HIV," Kuehl said.

Officials said nearly 60,000 people are living with HIV in the county, and about 1,850 more become infected each year. Many of them are low-income gay and bisexual men of color.

The supervisors directed the public health department to come back in 30 days with a plan to reach out to high-risk populations and disseminate the drug."

I'm assuming this distribution program will offer a heavily subsidized prescription or provide the drug for free at LA County expense. If this proves to be an effective strategy, other large urban centers may adopt this approach in a few years.
