I Am Not Spock proclaimed the title of Leonard Nimoy's 1975 autobiography, in which the veteran actor tried to distinguish himself from his most iconic role, as Star Trek's emotionless half-human, half-Vulcan science officer. Twenty years later, he published a follow-up entitled, I Am Spock, in which the actor-director warmly embraced his pointy-eared alter ego. Like it or not, Nimoy — who passed away on Feb. 27 at the age of 83 from end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease — was Spock to generations of sci-fi fans, so much so that when J.J. Abrams rebooted the franchise in the 2009 blockbuster, Nimoy was the one original cast member he made sure to bring back.

Two Spocks!

I loved Star Trek in my distant youth and especially Spock. Last year while I was in New York, I went to the theater for a Broadway play (The Nance, with Nathan Lane!) and sitting right across the aisle from me was Mr. Nimoy, his wife, and Zachary Quinto! Mr. Quinto and Mrs. Nimoy talked at every break like old girlfriends while Mr. Nimoy stayed strong, silent and Spock-like for the entire time! :) I am so happy I had that little privilege of seeing the two Spocks together! I certainly will miss the original!

This past summer I took a friend and his daughter on a tour of colleges in New England. While in Boston, I learned that Leonard Nimoy was a product of Boston's West End. A Jewish "slum" that was conveniently condemned by the city and developers as part of "urban renewal". The scheme the city cooked up was to stop garbage pickup in the Jewish neighborhood for several weeks. As the garbage piled up rats and vermin appeared. Health officials were called in and they condemned the area making room for "urban renewal".

Leonard donated money and energy to found The West End Museum to tell the history of where he and his family lived. http://thewestendmuseum.org/

I wonder if such things occurred on Vulcan? Logic and reason prevail over corruption and greed???

Another example of how Nimoy was a mensch: His response to a biracial girl who wrote to a letter addressed to Mr. Spock about how she didn't fit in anywhere, feeling he could relate due to his status as half-Vulcan, half-human. I didn't cry when I heard about his death, but I cried when I read what he wrote.
