This from the March 2015 issue of Gentlemen's Quarterly (Page183):

 

Houston has so many cultural, geographical, and culinary advantages, it is a wonder the food took this long to get great. There's always been Texas barbecue, a huge head start. Also, Tex-Mex, which northerners would learn to love if they tried the plate lunch at Irma's (downtown Houston). And the city has first-class sushi at Uchi, and Austin, Texas transplant. Then there's Oxheart and Underbelly, twoof America's best restaurants.

 

Houston is not like anywhere else, not even the rest of Texas. It is in eating range of Louisiana, right on the Gulf of Mexico, not far from the Deep South. It's got outsiders moving in: Vietnamese, South and Central Americans. Houston is our fourth larges city in population, but in food, it is poised to move into the top three. Number Five on the list of GQ's 25 Most Outstanding Restaurants of 2015 is Pax Americana (owned and managed by friends of mine), which is excellent. Number Ten on the list is Killen's Barbecue in Pearland, Texas (a short drive from downtown Houston). There are two from Austin: Number Twelve is Dai Due and number Eighteen is St. Phillip Bakeshop.

 

I've been to both Pax Americana and Killen's and highly recommend them to Houstonians, Texans, and visitors alike.
