I have never been to HI and have been considering a long weekend trip to Honolulu. Probably to be taken late January. Do you guys feel there is anything of interest in Honolulu for gay traveller?

There certainly are gay places to go and people to see. I wouldn't go there unless you have at least 4 days, and probably more like 5, since traveling there chews up most of the day. It's close to 5 1/2 hours even from SF, the nearest airport to Honolulu. When you have to add all the time at the airports, rental cars, transit, and so forth, most of the day is lost (although you do gain 2 hours from PST going there).

I thought a lot of fun dried up, when the Japanese took over before their economy tanked!

In 1998 my good friend and traveling partner went to three Hawaiian islands for almost two weeks. We were in Honolulu before--during--and after the new year and found the gay activity/ambience to have been indeed slow, slow, slow. On New Year's Eve of that year, we ventured to two clubs which were not too active either in spite of the beautiful decor, the decorations, the bar men, etc. But we did like the nude beach in Maui which was principally gay. My friend almost got into big time trouble when he secretly clicked his camera and took a pic of a gorgeous racially mixed man who was traveling with a woman and a kid in this section of the beach. The man didn't say anything-- it was the woman who went off. She frightened me!

Although we liked our trip tremendously, the gay scene was a little much to behold for its lack of people at the bars and other venues...

The best answer is "yes--quietly." Unicorn is right. It is a long, expensive flight from anywhere to Honolulu and unless you plan on staying in Waikiki ONLY, you need a car.

The gay scene in Hula has lost a lot since the "developers" destroyed the gay village along Kuhio Ave. Hula's Bar and Lei Stand was a fabulous and unique place, and that's gone. Oh, Hula's has re-opened elsewhere but it isn't the same as that old romantic location under the HUGE banyan tree.

Sometimes one or two of the bars will have strippers and usually they are fine specimens of manhood. And some are available for "outside enjoyment."

Elsewhere the gay scene is minimal, except for the gay beach on Maui, and even that is pretty much BYO.

You can't fuck your brains out as you can in many resort cities, but it is such a beautiful place that it is worth spending some time there.

Have a great time. Aloha!
