I think you were brave to show up at the room when they said the door would be open and to just walk in. Then again when it was completely dark. You were lucky you weren't arrested or hurt. So lucky in fact maybe you should buy a lottery ticket. Many of us have a procedure we're comfortable with and, for me, I always meet the guy in some public area before heading off to my room.
