March 2d will be the last day for Bronx Bombers at the Circle in the Square Theater. Although selling about 60% of their seats last week, the show isn't making enough to keep going. It will have had 31 previews and 29 regular performances on the closing date.

Hopefully the Yankees themselves will do better.

This is playwright Eric Simonson's third (and I think most painful) strike in terms of plays with sports themes (Lombardi and the awkwardly titled Magic/Bird were the first two). I sure hope he'll move on to a totally new topic for his next play. I'm not saying sports and theatre can't mix - but it seems clear that his approach isn't working.

When this opened off-Broadway, it got a scathing review from the NY Times. However, it did well at the box office, and the producers decided to tweak it a bit and present it on Broadway. The Times gave the new production a decent review (different critic, I think), but obviously, not enough people wanted to see Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio insert themselves into a feud between Billy Martin and Reggie Jackson -- who aren't exactly the dramatic equivalent of Blanche and Stanley. Nor are they people I would want to see portrayed on a stage. I think we all had enough of them in pinstripes.
