One of the greatest American prima ballerinas, Maria Tallchief, died in Chicago on Thursday at the age of 88. This was a woman who was a real pioneer on many levels and who fought hard to get to the prime place she held in the history of dance in the 20th century. And she did that before she married George Balanchine. She was a gracious and graceful lady who gave much back to the dance world that loved her so much. May she rest in peace.

The obit I read didn't say much about her pers life. I did not realize she married Balanchine. I knew she married a rich Chicago contractor but the obit didn't mention him either. Did she support native American causes? I guess I could google all this.

Yes, she had a very famous marriage to Balanchine. The Chicago businessman she was married to died a number of years ago after serving a stint in prison for some white collar crime. I know it caused her great pain .....
