CLICK THAT AND BE SUBJECTED TO THE POP-UPS FROM HELL!!!x(

Posted

I did click it -- last night -- and didn't get a single pop-up. :)

May I offer a suggestion?

If you're surfing the Web these days, a pop-up window stopper is a huge help. Pop-up and pop-under ads drive me crazy so I use a program that kills most of them in their tracks. The only indication I usually get is an icon flashing at the bottom of my screen showing that a window was stopped. Occasionally, I'll see a window start to form on the screen and then be deleted; those I especially like, because it's like visibly winning the battle. :)

The program I use is called Pop-Up Stopper companion. It's available from http://www.panicware.com.

I installed it a year ago and it's been working flawlessly ever since. (I run XP Professional and generally surf the Web with Internet Explorer. However, it claims to work with all major browsers and all variants of the Windows operating system.) Here's a link to the program's description:

It was free when I installed it a year ago. Today, you get a 30-day free trial and then it's $39.95. For my money, it's worth much more than that in saved aggravation.

They also offer a new version called Pop-Up Stopper Professional that seems to be available for $29.95 but has additional capabilities. If I were choosing one to install today, I'd probably choose this version over the Companion version. Here's the link:

I've been in the software business for 30 years and I can get frustrated quickly with bad software. Pop-Up Stopper has simply worked the way it was supposed to since the day I installed it. You can't ask for much more than that.

One note: there are many times when you want to have a window pop up. If you're about to click a link and you want the window to be able to pop up, just hold down the CTRL key and Pop-up Stopper lets the new window appear. If you forget, the window will be prevented and you'll get a little error message in the bottom status line of your browser's window. Usually the message will be something like "Done but with errors on the page." In these cases, all you have to do is hold down the CTRL key and click the link again.

Alternatively, it's easy to stop Pop-up Stopper for a period of time -- that only takes two clicks -- and then restart it when you want it working again. Also, there are a few options that control it's behavior. If I recall correctly, the default start-up options are the ones I ended up accepting.

Referencing the original statement I was responding to again, I checked out that site last night and wasn't even aware of the fact that lots of windows were being killed. And I didn't see even one pop-up. :)

ps: I just checked out the Panicware Website again. They still do offer a free version called Pop-Up Stopper Free Version. It only supports Netscape and Internet Explorer -- not AOL or other browsers. But if you use IE or Netscape, this might be the way to go for you. Why Perparation H for Windows and not for Macs ???

Macs also need those unsightly pop-ups shrunk to oblivion. :+

It seems to me that if they make pop-up stoppers only for Windows nightmare OSs then 'they' shoud be considerate enough to make pop-up widows only for the nightmare environments. (Symmetry in all things.)
