Actor John Kerr dies at 81

John Kerr, the handsome young actor who starred in both the Broadway and film productions of "Tea and Sympathy" and was also Lt. Cable in the film of "South Pacific", has died at the age of 81.

Ah, yes--I remember the handsome Lt. Cable. Too bad he didn't do much more acting.

His heart wasn't in it. He came from a prominent family, went to Exeter and Harvard, turned to acting. By the early 1960s, he wanted to turn to directing but the opportunities weren't there so he went to law school and even though he did occasional TV guest spots in the 1970s and early 80s he was a practicing attorney in Pasadena for the past 40 years.

 

"You've to be carefully taught!"

 

And who could ever forget Deborah Kerr's line to him in Tea and Sympathy ... "when you talk about this, and you will .. be kind."

 

How many of us have had that same thought?
