Huell Howser dead at 67

I was dismayed to hear that Huell died in Palm Springs on Monday morning. I always enjoyed his folksy wit and offbeat shows about the odd but interesting corners of California.

I had the pleasure of meeting Huell just after he moved to Southern California when he was beginning his career out here. He was a charming, honest and thoughtful man who had the rare ability to make you feel like you were the most important person he knew. What a sad day and somehow the State of California is a little less "Golden" a place with his passing.

I had never heard of him. But I'm not California based at all. I've been to the Golden State less than 10 times.
