So, I finally watched what was touted by many as being "the scariest movie of all time" - "The Ring" (compared to what - "Caddyshack"?). However, I'm totally confused.

If you haven't seen the movie, don't read any further - I would hate to ruin the banality of the movie for you.

Ok, so, the little girl is some demon seed who gets really pissed off and kills all the horses. Then her mother, who appears to be a basket case in her own right, decides to dispact her only child by tossing her down a well and then (with super-human strength) pushes a HUGE stone plate over the top, sealing her daughter forever.

So far, I'm jiggy with this.

Here's where I'm confused: what the fuck does all of that have to do with videotapes? And, why is the bitch making them and killing people who watch them? How does this advance her plan? WAIT! What IS the girl's plan?

I'm totally confused.

I've spoken to several friends and none of them understands why the bitch is making videos.

Any suggestions?

Frustratedly yours,

And when you're done explaining it to Mr. Foom...I have a few quetions too:

These things either slipped by or weren't explained. Why did the ex-boyfriend die? How did the weird kid know stuff? What do they mean she never sleeps? was that literal? (I saw the clock thing on the walk spinning. What about the fly plucked off the screen? Did she see a ring (the drain) while she was showering? Did she tell the guy accidentally at the end of the deleted message: How long could you survive in the well? 7 days. Why did the horses die? Was the kid evil before they threw her down the well? Did she turn evil? Whats up with that sixth sense kid? Did the horse jump overboard because it saw her weird face?

ARGGGH

The movie did give me the willies!

The videotapes make the victim relive the horror of the demon-child.

Because she's an evil demon-child.

>How does this advance her plan?

She's an evil demon-child who wants eternal revenge.

>WAIT! What IS the girl's plan?

To make people relive her horror manyfold for all eternity.

>quetions too:

>These things either slipped by or weren't explained. Why did

>the ex-boyfriend die?

(1) He saw the tape, and (2) The demon-child killed him after crawling out of the TV screen.

>How did the weird kid know stuff?

He had some kind of ESP, like some young kids do, you know.

>What do they mean she never sleeps?

The Devil doesn't sleep/is always alert/cannot be caught off-guard or defeated.

>was that literal?

Yes, absolutely.

>What about the fly plucked off the screen?

In other words, what's on the screen cannot be separated from reality (a foreshadowing of the demon-child crawling out of the TV screen)

>Did she see a ring (the drain) while she was

>showering?

Yes

>Did she tell the guy accidentally at the end of the

>deleted message: How long could you survive in the well? 7

>days.

Yes, although I doubt one could survive in a well for 7 days, even if it were summer in Washington state.

>Why did the horses die?

The demon-child scared them to death (drove them to suicide).

>Was the kid evil before they

>threw her down the well?

Absolutely

>Did she turn evil?

She was already evil--she just became vengeful.

>Whats up with that sixth sense kid?

For some reason, the demon-child was able to communicate with him.

>Did the horse jump overboard because it saw her weird face?

The horse jumped overboard because it sensed that the evil was in the woman. It was probably more than just the weird face. Call it "horse sense."

The main question I had was how was the demon-child going to kill the victim if the victim didn't happen to be near a TV screen at the 7-day point?

You don't read much, do you. Theres a thing called "suspension of disbelief". For this movie you needed it in spades. Whle there were some holes, I thought it was scary as hell. Bought the original "Ringu" today. Hear that its a little scarier because there is no muscial score (it seems the Japanese don't need to be told whats happening by John Williams). Will watch tonight.

She made the original tape with her mind. The girl has the ability to burn images into objects, as well as peoples minds (hence the mothers "insanity"). She spreads liek a sickness, Forcing people to make a choice between their own lives, or allowing the disease to spread by infecting others. In the end, the entire audience has been infected.

The point was that she was just evil. There was no reason for her to be that way, and over explantion would just kill it. It would be like trying to explain why King Lear was such a bastard. Not that Im comparing this to Shakespear, just making a point.

If you are really interested, there is a website with more info than youll ever need: http://www.ringworld.com

I fell asleep twenty minutes into it and woke up to a test pattern which was more entertaining than the movie. Just like Blair Witch. Dumb and boring.
