I changed jobs several months ago, going from one place where my sexuality wasn't a secret but it wasn't widely known, to another place where it seems everyone was made aware prior to my arriving.

Over the past couple of months some individuals (senior high youth, college students and their parents) have shown interest in any book and/or DVD suggestions for those wanting to understand the gay community better.

While I have a couple of books/DVDs that I have been able to lend out, I'm wondering if you all would have suggestions. I'd like to build up my library to have more to lend out.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Your question covers such a broad range I'm not sure where to start. Can you list the books/DVDs you lend? That would help as a guide as to the types of materials you're looking for.

Greathands,

As JAG stated, we need a bit more info, ie. historical or contemporary, single- or multi-issue, positive or negative, etc. as at the moment I wouldn't know if a recommendation in favour of Holleran's brilliant summation of 1970's NY's gay disco culture, Dancer from the Dance would be appropriate or not!

There was a documentary movie somewhat recently released on DVD's called "Word is Out: The stories of some of our lives", which I thought powerfully

conveyed what the gay experience was all about up to when it was made (early 80's). It's a sequence of interviews, but far more compelling than just a

sequence of talking heads.
