I know what you're thinking: "why doesn't he just go to bed?!?!?"

I will be briefer here...because the competition is much slimmer.

For Lead Actress in a Play, there are only seven eligible performances:

Nina Arianda - Born Yesterday

Cherry Jones - Mrs. Warren's Profession

Frances McDormand - Good People

Lily Rabe - The Merchant of Venice

Vanessa Redgrave - Driving Miss Daisy

Kathleen Turner - High

Hannah Yelland - Brief Encounter

Nina, Frances, Lily, and Vanessa are in.

Will they forget Hannah Yelland, sadly. Yes. So the last slot will go to Cherry or Kathleen...and Cherry's show's been closed for 6 months...so Kathleen will get it by default.

Supporting race will be very tight:

Ellen Barkin in Normal Heart

Edie Falco WILL break your heart in House of Blue Leaves

Judith Light was stunning in Lombardi and she's been doing it for months

Elizabeth Rodriguez in Motherfucker with the Hat

The other slots could go to Estelle Parsons or Renee Elise Goldsberry in Good People

Or perhaps Alison Pill in HOuse of Blue Leaves...or even Joanna Lumley in La Bete. (Okay, I can dream.)

THe big news is that there will only be four and not five nominees in the Best Actress in a Musical category. The bylaws stipulate that if there are fewer than seven nominees in any given category, they will only nominate as many as four performers, and this year there are only six eligible nominees. They are:

Janet Dacal - Wonderland

Sutton Foster - Anything Goes

Beth Leavel - Baby It's You!

Patina Miller - Sister Act

Donna Murphy - The People in the Picture

Sherie Rene Scott - Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown

Sutton, Patina are givens...and the race for the award is between them.

Janet Dacal will not get a nomination.

So will they give the other slots to Beth Leavel...the only bright spot in a lousy show. She's all ready won once...(for Drowsy Chaperone.)

Will they give it to Donna Murphy for the mediocre at best show. She's also won.

Will they go with Sherie Rene Scott who was in a mediocre show that closed a long time ago. She's been nominated three times and never won.

I am selecting Sherie and Donna.

and I think the supporting nods will go to:

Laura Benanti in Women on the Verge

Victoria Clarke in Sister Act

Nikki James in Book of Mormon

Patti LuPone for Women on the Verge

Laura Osnes in Anything Goes.

So I will wrap up, once again celebrating what a great year this has been for theater-goers in NY.

Thanks for going along with me.
