There's panic in the streets in India over this. News reports that some provinces and perhaps the national government will ban the release of the book in that country. But the funny thing is that, according to the author, Joseph Llelyveld, his book nowhere says that Gandhi was gay or even bi, but just reports that for a period in his life he had what apparently was a deep attraction to this German bodybuilder, with whom he lived for a while. There was some flowery romantic correspondence (shades of Eleanor Roosevelt and Lorena Hickock?). Draw what conclusions you will, but he's just reporting the facts.

What bothers me is the immediate charges in the Indian press that this is a "slur" on Ghandi, or somehow defamatory. Just reporting what happened is not a "slur." And - since the Delhi High Court declared the sodomy law unconstitutional recently - the traditional common law rule that falsely calling somebody gay is defamatory should be set aside, since it was based largely on the criminality attached to homosexuality. What these anxious headlines mean is that the Indian media still considers that there is something wrong with homosexuality.
