She Deserves it all

Thanks, EXPAT. I had not seen this, and thanks so much for sharing. Ellen really handled this situation in a classy manner. :D

It is always interesting to see how school Principals and Boards of Education handle, or more often than not mishandle, this situation. I taught for many years in a very conservative suburb of Los Angeles. This exact situation arose. The minute the “dear” ladies of the PTA learned of the situation they stormed the principal’s office and demanded that he deny the two girls entrance. He very gently informed them that either the girls would be allowed to attend or the Prom would be canceled. He continued by stating that there was NO WAY he was going to cancel the prom and disappoint ALL of the students. He had enough clout with the “dear” ladies that after considerable discussion they accepted his decision and left. The prom when off without a hitch and several of the “dear” ladies even admitted latter that they had over reacted and that the Principal’s strong stance had been correct. That was the last time the issue ever arose. A number a latter proms were attended, with out incident, by lesbian and gay couples. All it takes is an intelligent, a strong, and a fair person sitting behind the door that says principal. My school and community were extremely fortunate to have for twenty year one of the VERY BEST.

What a courageous girl and a fantastic gesture by Ellen and tonic.com.

I didn't attend my senior prom. I wasn't out, nor was anyone else in my school, or indeed my small town, but I wasn't interested in taking a girl. I'm sure all hell would've broken loose if I'd tried to take a guy and my family would still be suffering for it to this day. For me as an out gay man, my home town is much nicer to visit than it will ever be to live in.

Agreed, Ellen is a class act. I see such courage today compared to my teen years.

I was gay but did not know that such a thing existed. I went to my prom with a girl and had to pretend to fit in.....something that i've done my whole life at such an expense. It is so wonderful to see that many are now able to live their true life despite the pressure to conform that society pushes onto most. Sometimes I feel that we have come so far but realize that as far as we have come, these stories of individual bravery should no longer be necessary.
