You guys need to think about the "Southern" rule of thumb and that is, if you can catch it on the first bounce, nothing happened; and the 5 second rule which is, if it was on the ground or floor for 5 seconds or less, return it to the grill or whatever and cook/eat it as "normal". :)

Best regards,

Restaurant Version

Chefs go through a different set of permutations which are likewise likely to see the food served up, especially if it's meat which is nearly ready. The reasoning being that by serving the food punctually, the customer will be none the wiser; whereas if it's late, you risk the displeasure of the customer, waiter, head chef and Maitre D. I have witnessed this while working in a silver service restaurant.

the "Southern" rule of thumb

The Army rule of thumb, according to my father, was: If it fell on the floor behind the cafeteria counter, the server would pick it up, re-plate it, and say, "It fell on a piece of paper."

All these rules of thumb can be generalized as "What they don't know can't hurt them."

I used to have a bf who took much the same approach to our relationship.

Unfortunately, I was rather inquisitive..
